ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study is to reveal the regional disparities in Bajra productivity and factors responsible in Rajasthan during 1990-91 to 2014-15. For achieving this aim, the study is divided into 3 parts. First part reveals the patterns of regional disparities in Bajra productivity during 1990-91 and 2014-15. The second part denotes to find out the changes in Bajra production during study period and factors affecting. Conclusions are drawn and suggestions are made in part third. The study has observed that in 1990-91 bajra productivity was high and moderate in northern half of the Rajasthan, while southern districts have low bajra productivity because geo-climatic conditions were more favorable for its cultivation in northern parts of the state as compare to southern. But in 2014-15, bajra productivity is moderate to high only in central parts, while in north-western and south-eastern, parts it is low. Bajra productivity has experienced negative change in 11 districts, whereas the remaining districts have registered positive change. More over the districts where guar cultivation has gained area, bajra productivity has declined which affected the bajra productivity index value. The study has concluded that bajra productivity has increased in north- eastern parts, while it has declined in western districts of Rajasthan which largely is the result of the introduction of guar crop in post 1990-91. For increasing the bajra productivity and minimizing the regional disparities in it, government should provide hybrid high yielding seeds of bajra and remunerative prices, and assured marketing, a favorable government policy for bajra promotion, etc.
